Luz Guerra

Director of Programs

Luz Guerra joined Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues as the Program Director in October 2006. In this capacity, she oversees the organization’s program design and implementation, including Common Vision and national convenings of LGBTQ funders.

Prior to joining Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues, Luz was Managing Director of Global Ministries with the progressive Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco, where she trained groups from around the country on inclusivity. She also worked for the National Coalition of Education Activists, where she designed and provided training for community activists in public education systems around the country.

From 1988 to 1997, Luz worked for the American Friends Service Committee in Austin, Texas, directing program with a focus on solidarity with Central America and sanctuary for refugees. She was the key organizer of New Bridges Texas, which trained facilitators who collectively facilitated hundreds of workshops on racism, heterosexism, sexism, adultism and anti-Semitism

From 1995 to 2006 Luz was also a private consultant to non-profit organizations on organizational health and capacity building, strategic planning, anti-oppression and ally development, and program research and evaluation. In 1998. she wrote a report for the Funding Exchange on technical assistance in communities of color

Luz received her bachelor’s degree in political science from the State University of New York, New Paltz and her master’s degree in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.

Luz has a 22 year old son, Carib, and lives in Austin, TX where she cyber-commutes to work five days a week.
