Progressive Religious Responses to Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Funder Briefing

3:00 pm – 4:00 pm ET

Burwell v. Hobby Lobby permits closely held corporations to exempt themselves from anti-discrimination laws and deny their employees legally-mandated benefits simply by presenting religious objections. To date, Burwell has inspired more than 100 lawsuits challenging the Affordable Care ActÍs contraception mandate, with greater than two dozen exemptions already granted. Meanwhile, more than a dozen states have sought to create or strengthen legislation codifying Burwell much more expansively than the narrow decision suggests.

Judicial and legislative strategies to counter the effects of Burwell face a long-term, uphill battle. Alternative strategies are needed now to link issues across constituencies, move public opinion and educate policymakers. People of faith across the country are raising their voices to oppose the expansion of legal protections allowing employers to discriminate and deny women access to basic healthcare and LGBT individuals and families fairness in the workplace and community. Join us for a telebriefing spotlighting efforts by religious leaders to organize and advocate in support of reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights and to reclaim the mantle of religious liberty from those who would use it to deny others these rights.
